Seward boys, Valdez girls win Seahawk Classic title

The Seward boys and Valdez girls polished off titles at the Seahawk Classic in Seward on Saturday.
The Valdez girls finished with a 3-0 record by topping Skyview 65-42, though the Panthers led at half.
With a lead of 30-29 lead at the half, Skyview lost the handle, as they were outscored 36-12 in the second half.
Caitlin Amble had a big game, as she scored 36 points for the Buccaneers, including 23 in the second half. She was named tourney MVP.
Stefany Malatesta led Skyview with 17 points, and Chelsey Ahlers had 15 total.
The Seward boys finished their 3-0 run through the tournament with a 41-30 victory over Homer.
Jalen Terry had 25 points for the Seahawks, while tourney MVP Devon Kennelty had 16 for Homer.
Valdez was able to hold off the Skyview boys Saturday, as they topped the Panthers 52-47.
Skyview never trailed by far, as the halftime score was 24-17. But even though they outscored Valdez 30-28 in the second half, it wasn’t enough to win.
Glacier Rohrer led the Valdez squad with 22 points in the game.
Preston Penrod led Skyview’s effort with 15 points, and Albert White put up 14 points as well.
The Seward girls finished up the tournament with a 65-31 victory over Homer.
The Seahawks had three girls in double figures. Meg Berry had 15 points, while Jasmine Perea and Tessa Adelmann had 10 points apiece. For Homer, Elissa Tutt had eight points.
Members of the girls all-tournament team were Jasmine Perea, Chelsey Clarke, Meg Berry and Tessa Adelmann of Seward; Stefany Malatesta and Chelsey Ahlers of Skyview; Alex Derifield of Valdez; and Haley Oliver of Homer.
Members of the boys all-tournament team were Albert White of Skyview; Ryan Cotney and Robin Glosser of Homer; Jalen Terry, Logan Clemens and Jeff Buchanan of Seward; and Max Duffy and Glacier Rohrer of Valdez.
Lady Lynx Prep Shootout
The Kenai Central girls defeated Craig 38-31 at Dimond for fourth place in the Maroon Tournament.
The Kardinals fell behind 13-4 after the first quarter, and were still trailing 22-16 at halftime. Kenai cut the lead to 27-26 after three quarters, and outscored Craig 12-4 in the final frame.
Cassie Ross paced Kenai with 11 points, while Nicole Tieaskie had 10. For Craig, Melissa Castle had 16 points.
Soldotna boys 42, Kodiak 36
The Stars pulled out a nonconference win in Kodiak.
Jemuel Medina gave Kodiak a 32-31 lead with a layup with 2 minutes, 45 seconds, left in the game. Soldotna’s Cory Carver answered with a 3-pointer moments later and SoHi never trailed the rest of the way. Tanner Fowler led SoHi with 11 points.

The Stars notched a nonconference win in Kodiak.
The Bears had an 18-11 lead midway through the second quarter, but SoHi answered with an 18-4 run that started in the second quarter and spilled over into the third quarter.
Kaillee Skjold had 17 points to pace the Stars, while Kelci Benson had 12 and Julie Litchfield had 10.
Nenana Invitational Tournament
The Cook Inlet Academy boys team got 38 points from David Reischach and beat Nenana 65-43 for the tourney title.
“We’re really starting to click as a team,” CIA coach Justin Franchino said. “Everybody is playing in their role. It’s nice to have this momentum because we have a lot of conference play coming up.”
Levi Grinestaff added 14 for the Eagles, while Koebryn Mlynarik had 13.
Nicole Moffis came up big in the fourth quarter to help the Cook Inlet Academy girls to a 35-31 win over Nikolaevsk Saturday.
Moffis racked up 14 points in the game, and Megan Bauder totaled 12 points to help CIA win the third-place match.
Sofia Kalugin led Nikolaevsk’s effort with 10 points, with teammate Kilina Klaich, who had eight points total.
The Nikolaevsk boys took third by defeating Fort Yukon 83-54.
Nikolaevsk’s Andre Tipikin was named the tournament MVP. David Reischach and Levi Grinestaff made the all-tournament team for Cook Inlet Academy.
The girls MVP was Kandace Carroll of Fort Yukon. Keely Powers and Megan Bauder were all-tournament players for the Eagles,while Sophia Kalugin and Nianiella Dorvall made the all-tournament team for Nikolaevsk.
