Kenai’s Bailey Beeson takes a shot in the third period Friday against Kodiak.

The Kenai girls busted a tight game wide open in the fourth quarter to beat Kodiak 51-40 on Friday night in Northern Lights Conference action.

Senior Morgan Wensley stepped up to the free-throw line five times in the last 4 minutes, 23 seconds, to make 9 of her 10 shots. Wensley had 22 points.

“We were down, and needed points, and I have to give credit to Cassie (Ross), who was making passes to me, and Carolyn (Kiefer),” Wensley said. “It was just a good team win.”

Kiefer had 12 points of her own to aid in the win.

Kenai head coach Stacia Rustad said the team turned up the defensive pressure in the second half.

“Our first half was not up to our standards, because we had a lot of unforced turnovers and missed a lot of good looks at the basket, which happens sometimes,” Rustad said.

Kenai was trailing 28-24 at the end of the third quarter, but was able to score more points in the fourth quarter than the previous three combined, outscoring Kodiak 27-12.

“We made some adjustments during halftime, and they started making shots, and they took care of the ball in the fourth,” Rustad said. “Thankfully, Morgan got to the line and got it done.”

Carissa Cannon scored nine points to lead Kodiak. Three other Kodiak players scored eight points each.

“When you tell them to safeguard (Wensley) and not let her get the ball so we don’t send her to the line, and then that’s all that happens, it makes it difficult to mount a charge,” Kodiak head coach Stephanie Dandliker said.

“Players like Morgan and Carolyn have been with me for three years, and I have the utmost confidence in them to make the shots,” Rustad said.

With this win, Kenai is now sitting with a 12-6 overall record, while Kodiak is at 6-8 overall.

Kenai boys 43, Kodiak 42

The Kenai boys edged out the Kodiak Bears in a tight match Friday in Kodiak in NLC play.

AJ Hull gave Kenai the lead at 43-42 with 1:45 remaining on a steal and layup. Kodiak held the ball for the final shot, but Austin Frick missed a 3-pointer from the left corner with one second left.

Kodiak led 42-37 at the 3:12 mark in the fourth. The Bears went to a stall offense, but turned the ball over several times in the closing minutes.

Bo Reilly led Kenai with 12 points, and AJ Hull put up 11 points as well.

Kodiak drops to 0-5 in the NLC, 5-11 overall.
