SoHi boys finish 7th at state ski meet

Posted: February 25, 2012 - 11:25pm

The Soldotna boys ski team led the Kenai Peninsula at the state Nordic skiing championships, which concluded Saturday at Kincaid Park in Anchorage with relay races.

“The boys just had a really solid season,” Soldotna coach Dan Harbison said. “Those guys kept it together and put in a very consistent performance race after race.”

The Stars finished seventh in the team times with a total of 4 hours, 29 minutes and 49 seconds. Service won the boys title.

In Saturday’s 4-by-5-kilometer mixed relay, the Stars also finished seventh. The team was made up of Luke Michael, Colton Diehl, Dillon Jensen and Jonas Wikstrom.

The finish helped the Stars finish just four seconds ahead of Colony in the race for Region III supremacy.

“Luke Michael had a tremendous race today,” Harbison said. “All of the boys had tremendous races.”

Harbison said his boys struggled a bit Friday, but came back strong Saturday.

Michael of Soldotna was the fastest Kenai Peninsula skier Friday. He finished 15th with a time of 31 minutes, 30 seconds, in the 10-kilometer mass start classic race, as Jensen followed close behind in 26th with a time of 32:38.

Isaac Lammers of Chugiak won Friday’s race with a time of 30:13, and the overall state skimeister award.

Homer finished 10th as a team and 11th in the relay.

Andre Lovett was Homer’s top boy and finished Friday in 33rd place, with a time of 32:57, as teammate Brian Rowe finished right behind him in 35th, with a time of 32:59.

Kenai finished 15th as a team, and 12th in Saturday’s relay.

The top boys finisher from Kenai on Friday was Travis Cooper in 45th place, with a time of 33:32. Kenai coach D’Anna Gibson said Cooper’s performance in the Thursday skate race was the highlight of the meet.

“Each one of the team members that had been to state before bested their places from last year,” Gibson said.

The Skyview boys took 17th as a team and 17th in the relay.

Kade Cooper paced the Skyview boys Friday with a 73rd-place finish, and a time of 35:34.

The Seward boys finished 19th in the team times and the relay.

Miles Knotek took the top honors for Seward on Friday with a 90th-place finish, and a time of 38:00.

The top-finishing girls skier from the Kenai Peninsula on Friday was Taylor Ostrander from Kenai, finishing 39th with a time of 28:36 in the 7.5-kilometer classic mass start. Sadie Fox from Soldotna finished close behind with a time of 28:48, good for 40th place.

Marion Woods from South won Friday’s race with a time of 24:02.

Homer’s girls finished in 10th to take top honors from the peninsula, while West Valley won the girls title. The Mariners took ninth in Saturday’s relay.

Marie Schmidt placed 44th on Friday to lead the Homer girls, with a time of 28:58.

The Kenai girls ended up 12th as a team, and took 12th in the relay. The Kardinals also got the academic award for having the highest team grade-point average.

“We put it together,” Gibson said. “We weren’t ahead of Homer, but we did really well. We got third in the region meet and we stayed there.”

Skyview was 16th as a team and 16th in the relay.

Mika Morton finished 71st on Friday with a time of 31:30 to lead the Skyview girls team.

The Soldotna girls were 17th as a team and 17th in the relay.

Region III champion Bree Mucha did not ski for Soldotna on Friday or Saturday due to illness.

“She raced her first day feeling horrible,” said Gibson, who is Mucha’s mother. “We decided the best thing to do was to sit out the races so she wouldn’t get any worse.”

Considering the absence of Mucha, Harbison was proud of the way his girls did. He was especially proud of Fox for skiing the tough opening leg of the relay.

Lindsey Kromrey led the Seward girls on Friday with a 75th-place finish, and a time of 32:05. Seward finished 18th as a team and 18th in the relay.
