Peninsula Conference wrap: CIA girls move to title game

Bristol Bay, CIA, Nikolaevsk boys pick up wins

The Cook Inlet Academy girls moved to the championship game of the Peninsula Conference tournament with a 60-17 victory over Lumen Christi on Wednesday at Cook Inlet Academy.

 

The Eagles, the top seed and two-time defending champions, grabbed a 41-7 lead at halftime.

“We came out and our press looked as good as it has at any time this season,” Eagles coach Rustin Hitchcock said. “We were ready to defend our home court at regions.”

CIA will play the winner of the Bristol Bay-Nikolaevsk contest at 6 p.m. Friday at Kenai Central High School for the title. Nikolaevsk, the No. 2 seed, and Bristol Bay, the No. 3 seed, play today at 5:15 p.m.

CIA boys 56, Seldovia 33

The third-seeded Eagles cruised to a first-round win over the sixth-seeded Sea Otters.

The Eagles took a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and a 31-13 lead at halftime. David Reischach had 18 points for CIA to lead all scorers. Koebryn Mlynarik chipped in with 13 points, while Braden Chumley had 10 points.

Calem Collier had 10 points to pace Seldovia.

CIA plays No. 2 seed Nikolaevsk in the semifinals at 7 p.m. today, while Seldovia faces Nanwalek in a loser-out game at 2 p.m. today.

Bristol Bay boys 50, Ninilchik 33

The Angels, the No. 4 seed, got off to a quick start to take down the Wolverines, the No. 5 seed.

Bristol Bay outscored Ninilchik 14-3 in the first frame. By the time Ninilchik got going and outscored Bristol Bay 19-14 in the final quarter, the game was out of reach.

Brandon Rush pumped in 19 points for the Angels, while Sergie Chukwak added 14. For the Wolverines, Dakota Peterson and Jayke Cooper had nine points apiece.

Bristol Bay moves on to face No. 1 seed Lumen Christi at 3:45 p.m. today. The Archangels had a bye Wednesday. Ninilchik does not play until Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Cook Inlet Academy.

Nikolaevsk 1, Nanwalek 0

The Warriors got an assist from Mother Nature in picking up the opening-round victory in a forfeit on Wednesday.

Due to whiteout conditions in Nanwalek, the Eagles could not make it to Soldotna for the game.

Nikolaevsk, the No. 2 seed, moves into a semifinal matchup with No. 3 seed CIA at 7 p.m. today. Nanwalek plays Seldovia in a loser-out game at 2 p.m. today.
