Friday NLC roundup: SoHi girls qualify for state

Kenai boys miss out on automatic state berth

Posted: March 2, 2012 - 7:41pm

Staff report

The Soldotna girls basketball team advanced to state for the second straight year with a 44-24 victory over Kodiak on Friday at the Northern Lights Conference tournament at Wasilla.

The Stars, the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division, advance to Saturday's championship at 6 p.m. The Bears fall into the third-place game at 12:30 p.m.

With just two losses to Class 4A teams, the Stars were looking like a sure bet to make state no matter what, because the top two teams in the Winning Percentage Index that don't earn automatic qualification earn WPI berths to state.

But Soldotna coach Doug Blossom said going into the tournament he wanted to take no chances, and the Stars did not.

After leading 7-6 after one quarter, Soldotna's speed and endurance took over in the second quarter as the Stars outscored the Bears 17-4 for a 24-10 lead at halftime. Kodiak would never seriously threaten after that.

SoHi's defense was dominant. The Stars held the Bears to 19 percent shooting from the floor and forced 19 turnovers. Soldotna also was only out-rebounded 32-30 by the bigger Bears.

Kaillee Skjold paced the Stars with 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor. Skjold also led the team with 11 rebounds.

Julie Litchfield had 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Kelci Benson had 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

Carissa Cannon paced Kodiak with six points.

Soldotna had 19 turnovers itself, but the Stars made 38.1 percent from the floor.

Colony boys 53, Kenai 43

The Knights, a No. 2 seed, held off No. 1 seed Kenai in the fourth quarter to earn a spot in the state tournament.

Colony will play in the NLC championship at 8 p.m. Saturday. Kenai plays in the third-place game at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. The Kards' only shot at a state berth would be through Winning Percentage Index qualification.

Kenai took a 19-13 lead after one quarter, but would score only 11 points in the next two quarters. Kenai trailed 36-30 heading into the fourth quarter and could not get over the hump.

Nathan Umbarger had 16 points for Colony, while Damien Fulp had 14 points. For Kenai, Shane Spalding had 14 points, Bo Reilly had 12 points and Colton Hayes added 11 points.

The Knights were able to hold AJ Hull to no field goals and six points.

Kenai girls 58, Skyview 18

The Kardinals, the No. 2 seed from the south, moved into the fourth-place game by putting an end to Skyview's season.

Kenai put three players in double figures. Morgan Wensley had 17 points, while Carolyn Kiefer had 16 and Bailey Beeson had 13.

For No. 4 seed Skyview, Stefany Malatesta had eight points before fouling out.

Kenai faces Palmer in the fourth-place game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Skyview boys 47, Homer 41

In a battle of future Class 3A teams, Skyview, a No. 4 seed, advanced to the fourth-place game and ended Homer's season.
Skyview used a 17-0 first-quarter run to score its first NLC win of theseason. The Panthers nowface Palmer Saturday at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.
DJ Diaz led Skyview with 14 points and Richard Reynolds added 11.
Sam Reinert led Homer, a No. 3 seed, with 12.
This is the last NLC tournament for both teams.

Palmer boys 42, Soldotna 31

The Moose, a No. 4 seed, clamped down on defense to end Soldotna's season and move to the fourth-place game.

Palmer used a 31-22 rebound advantage to take 38 shots from the field, while Soldotna, a No. 3 seed, had 24. The Stars were able to hit 46 percent of their shots, but Palmer hit on 45 percent.

The Moose grabbed a 13-4 lead after one quarter and were able to keep the game even after that. Connor Looney had 18 points for Palmer, while Jared Straight had 13. For Soldotna, Evan Withrow had 11 points.

Palmer faces Skyview at 10:45 a.m.

Palmer girls 66, Homer 23

The Moose, a No. 4 seed, cruised past the Mariners, a No. 3 seed, and into the fourth-place game, while Homer saw its season come to an end.

Taylor Blake had 19 points for the Moose, while Haley Oliver paced the Mariners with six points.

Palmer faces Kenai for fourth place at 9 a.m.
