David Reischach scored 40 of Cook Inlet Academy’s 62 points against Lumen Christi during Friday’s Peninsula Conference championship at Kenai Central High School.

The Cook Inlet Academy boys shut down Lumen Christi Friday night to win the Peninsula Conference tournament 62-30 and earn a berth at the Class 2A state tournament.

David Reischach powered CIA to the win with 40 points, making it seem as if he owned the court with big shot after big shot.

“Feels great, that was our goal the whole year, and it’s awesome that we did it as a team,” Reischach said after the game. “It doesn’t feel any better right now.”

Eighteen of Reischach’s points came in the third quarter, as CIA outscored Lumen Christi 25-12. Reischach ended the third quarter with a buzzer beater shot from approximately half court.

At halftime, CIA led 23-9, and head coach Justin Franchino told his team to give more as the Eagles attempted to earn a state berth after missing out on the big dance last year.

“We talked about that at the half, how teams will usually make a push, but I told them to not be rattled by that, to stick to the game plan and execute, and that’s what we did,” Franchino said. “To be able to spread the floor like that, they didn’t have an answer for David, and our other four guys are threats, and they couldn’t just focus on David. We have Koebryn (Mlynarik) hitting threes and Zac (Taplin) taking the ball down low, and that kept them honest.”

Mlynarik had eight points of his own, while Levi Grinestaff produced six points.

“We held them to nine points in the first half, and that’s a team that scores 65, 70 points a game,” Franchino said. “Braden Chumley guarded probably the third best player in our region, and shut him down.”

The Archangels' top scorer was Pat Moran with 15 points.

Lumen Christi head coach Stewart Allen did not make any excuses for a disappointing loss.

“I just want to say Reischach and CIA had a great game, and they came in well prepared,” Allen said. “I can’t take anything away from that, but I wish I could, I wish I could sit back and say we were playing a bad game, but that wasn’t the case.

“Our motivation for next year will be that Reischach is graduating.”

CIA girls 56, Nikolaevsk 20

The Cook Inlet Academy girls overwhelmed Nikolaevsk to win their third consecutive Peninsula Conference title.

The Eagles effectively sealed the win with a big third quarter, outscoring Nikolaevsk 18-5.

“Megan (Bauder) spearheads our defense, and she does not let any ballhandler feel comfortable, and our two guards came up big as well,” head coach Rustin Hitchcock said. “Our younger kids are coming into the program and playing well, so it looks pretty good.”

Bauder led CIA with 16 points in the game, while teammates Keely Powers and Kelsie Leaf had 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Nikolaevsk was led by Sophia Kalugin, who had eight points.

Nikolaevsk boys 56, Ninilchik 47

The Nikolaevsk boys managed to topple Ninilchik in the Peninsula Conference tournament on Friday at CIA to advance to the semifinal round for the second-place match.

Nikolaevsk was strong from the beginning, outscoring Ninilchik 18-9 in the first quarter, but Ninilchik managed to rally back to tie the game up at halftime. With a one-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, however, Nikolaevsk pulled away in the final frame to cruise to the win.

Eric Mametieff scored 21 points to lead Nikolaevsk, while teammate Blake Klaich had 16 points.

Jack Wheeler had a big game for Ninilchik, despite the loss, as he scored 26 points.
