Skyview hosts weightlifting competition

Skyview, Kenai Central and Nikiski high schools attended the first SST Weightlifting Competition on Wednesday at Skyview High School.

According to Skyview teacher Eric Pomerleau, SST is a high school weight training curriculum that uses a year-round program to improve athletic performance. The program is divided into three sessions — fall, spring and summer — and includes 240 workouts for the entire year.

Athletes lift weights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and do speed work on Tuesday and Thursday. Pomerleau said that because Skyview, Kenai Central and Nikiski follow the program exactly, the schools decided to have a competition.

The events were squats, cleans, snatches and Fight Gone Bad, a cross-fit circuit.

Skyview led all schools with 197 points, while Kenai had 175 and Nikiski had 125.
