CIA girls move to state final

Eagles will play Tikigaq for program's 1st state title

Posted: March 13, 2012 - 11:37pm

The Cook Inlet Academy girls beat Klawock 51-45 on Tuesday to advance to the Class 2A state championship game at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

“It was so scary at the end, but we just needed to keep our heads in the game, because everyone was getting really catty,” sophomore Nicole Moffis said. “It’s the first time in two years we got out of the semifinal game.”

Indeed, CIA has made it to the semifinal match the past two seasons, but lost both years to Skagway, which relegated the Eagles to the third-place game.

This time, however, was different. The Eagles will play in the first state title game in the program’s history.

Head coach Rustin Hitchcock said he was relieved that CIA got over the “Southeast hump,” as he put it, referring to the teams from that conference that have kept the Eagles from getting to the championship game.

“We talk all year about clutch free throws, and we design all our practices over that, and that is what put it away tonight,” Hitchcock said. “Our ball control and ability to rise above the intensity is what helped us, and it was getting physical near the end.”

Moffis had 16 points to lead CIA, and teammates Kelsie Leaf and Megan Bauder had 14 points and 10 points, respectively.

“Our seniors really stepped up and led us, and helped us so much,” Moffis said.

Cassi Williams had 23 points to lead Klawock’s effort.

CIA plays Tikigaq in the state championship match Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena, and Moffis says CIA is as ready as it can be to finally win it all.

“We have to go out there and play our hearts out, because we’ve never played them before.”
