Nikolaevsk girls lose in state semifinals

With a younger-than-average team, the Nikolaevsk girls managed to win their first round game Monday at the Class 2A girls state championships, but did not make it any further, as they lost to Tikigaq 57-26 on Tuesday at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

“Our weakness today was ballhandling, we had a difficult time handling the pressure with the ball,” sophomore Nianiella Dorvall said.

Nikolaevsk, a team that features no upperclassmen, had 34 turnovers to Tikigaq’s 12, and Tikigaq was able to come up with 28 points off of turnovers.

“We knew that we were facing a tough team, and the girls played a good defensive game, but our youth and inexperience hurt us today,” head coach Bea Klaich said. “Ballhandling was an issue, and we knew what to do, but they didn’t execute it as well as I had hoped.”

After a first quarter in which Nikolaevsk was outscored 17-6, the second quarter featured an 11-10 differential, as Nikolaevsk tried to keep pace.

However, the third quarter is what won it for Tikigaq, as they outscored Nikolaevsk 20-5.

“We’re a young team, so going out there and getting the experience is the best thing we can do,” Klaich said.

Sophia Kalugin led Nikolaevsk with eight points, and teammate Kilina Klaich had six.

Amanda Sage had 14 points to lead Tikigaq.

Even with the loss, Nikolaevsk will play in the third-place consolation round Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Sullivan Arena.

“I told the girls in the locker room that these are the kind of games that will make us better,” Klaich said. “These are good games, and they’re playing girls that are a few years older than them, so I’m proud of them.”
