Nikolaevsk girls fall to Klawock in 3rd-place game at state

Posted: March 14, 2012 - 2:50pm

Much has been said about the youth and inexperience of the Nikolaevsk girls basketball team, and it ultimately showed up in the Warriors' final two games at the Class 2A state tournament in Anchorage.

Nikolaevsk fell to Klawock 56-35 in the third-place game Wednesday at the Sullivan Arena after losing in the semifinals Tuesday.

“Klawock is an excellent team,” head coach Bea Klaich said. “We felt like we had a chance at them, but they gave us that full-court pressure the whole way, and pressure has been our nemesis all year long, so we made turnovers that led to easy baskets for them.”

Klawock was able to score 24 points off of turnovers committed by Nikolaevsk, similar to the 28 points the Warriors gave up Tuesday against Tikigaq.

Klawock outscored Nikolaevsk 29-13 in the first half, and that lead allowed the Chieftains to cruise to the win.

“I felt like we played them well in the half court, but our turnovers is what hurt us,” Klaich said.

Kilina Klaich led Nikolaevsk with 15 points, and teammate Sophia Kalugin had nine.

Klawock was led by junior Cassi Williams, who had 31 points. The Chieftains have two seniors and four juniors on their roster.

“Experience is the key, and we got some experience this week,” Klaich said. “We don’t have any juniors or seniors, and I’m guessing they (Klawock) do. Hopefully we’ll be back here next year and the next several years.”

Only time and practice will allow Nikolaevsk to improve and continue to try for a state title, Bea Klaich stated, and this tournament only contributed to the Warriors' effort.

“Considering their youth and inexperience, I think they performed really well,” coach Klaich said. “They got a good win against Tok (on Monday), and I know they want to be back because they’re really hungry for it and are willing to work for it.

“I talked a Klawock team member and they said see you next year, hopefully in the championship game.”
