Seward girls eliminated at state

After two losses in the first two days of the Class 3A state tournament, the Seward girls have been eliminated from the consolation bracket.

The Seahawks lost to Craig 45-43 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage on Friday.

“They simply had two more when the buzzer went off, and that’s basketball,” Seward head coach Curtis Berry said. “We had our opportunities and they had theirs, and it came down to the wire, and they won.”

Seward led 12-8 after the first quarter, and from there the game never was far out of hand, as the biggest lead was six points.

“I don’t think we shot well by any means, but we also didn’t get the momentum we wanted,” Berry said.

Tessa Adelmann led the Seahawks’ effort with 12 points, and teammate Meg Berry had 11 points.

Melissa Castle had 17 points to pace Craig.

“Meg usually is good at long range, and she shot well, but when we play a team like Craig, it’s going to go back and forth,” Berry said.

Even with the loss, Berry said the team is confident to play for another shot at the title next season. The Seahawks won the Southcentral Conference title this year.

“We’ll be losing four seniors, but I hope they realize that if they keep it in perspective, they can still win a region title, and make it to state again,” he said.
