Skyview grad Hutchison nabs national title

Skyview graduate Michaela Hutchison won a title at 121 pounds in the Women’s Wrestling University Nationals held March 24 at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City.

 

The victory showed Hutchison is in good form as she prepares for the U.S. Olympic Trials on April 21 and 22 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Hutchison, a senior at Oklahoma City University, won 1-0, 1-0, over Sarah Hildebrandt to take the title. She went 5-0 with three pins at the tournament.

Also at the tournament, Chugiak High School graduate Melissa Apodaca made the finals but lost. Apodaca, who wrestled at Soldotna Middle School, lost 3-1, 6-0, at 138 pounds to Trinity Plessinger of Colorado Springs in the gold medal match.

She beat Alli Ragan of Carbondale, Ill., in the true second-place match.

Apodaca also will wrestle in the Olympic Trials, due to a second-place finish at the U.S. Open in December 2011.
