Nikiski soccer teams split against Houston

The Nikiski girls soccer team continue to surprise early on in the season with a win against Houston on Tuesday at the Dome in Anchorage, defeating the Hawks 3-0.
“We were on the attack quite a bit, and I tried players in new and different positions,” head coach Mandy Adair said. “It’s great for me to be able to get younger players in the game.”
Nikiski led the game 2-0 at halftime, with the first score coming from Morgan Tschida, with an assist from Bailey Buchholz.
Rachel Thompson, who has been tabbed as goalkeeper for the season, was played up front in the match, and scored the second and third goals, with assists from Tschida and Buchholz. In place of Thompson, Adair put Katie Costello in the goalie position.
“Those three girls were our ‘big three’ in the game,” Adair said.
Nikiski will face off against Grace Christian on Monday in Anchorage.
The Nikiski boys team fell to Houston with a 2-1 loss, also on Tuesday at the Dome in Anchorage.
Head coach Jim Coburn said the team began the game “a little flat”, but improved defensively in the second half.
“Inexperience cost us, and we didn’t play well on defense at first,” Coburn said. “Guys are playing that are new to their position, and Houston jumped on us quick.”
Christian Riddall scored the lone goal for Nikiski in the second half.
Nikiski will play Grace on Monday in Anchorage.
