SoHi girls, SkyHi boys win area track meet

Posted: April 25, 2012 - 4:07pm

Under bright, sunny skies Tuesday afternoon, area track and field athletes showed off their skills in the second of two split competitions at Kenai Central high school this year.
Skyview took the boys crown, totaling 112 points, which was 27 more than runner-up Kenai, and Soldotna won the girls title, 121 points over Kenai’s 91.
The 1,600-meter run featured some young talent and close competition, as Kenai freshman Jonah Theisen won the boys race by 1.6 seconds over Skyview’s Micah Hilbish. Theisen’s time was 4 minutes, 48.36 seconds.
“I didn’t think I’d be running this fast,” Theisen said. “I’ve already improved 12 seconds from last year, and I’ve put in a lot of work, but I can usually rely on a good kick.”
Soldotna freshman Dani McCormick won the girls 1,600 meters, with a time of 6:07.91.
The 300-meter hurdles featured a classic case of sibling rivalry. Junior Leah Sandahl won the girls race in 51.9 seconds, and senior Joe Sandahl took the boys win in 43 seconds flat.
“I felt strong on the first corner, and then I felt the wind pick up, and a little bit of a lull, but I just pushed as hard as I could,” Leah Sandahl said. “I go to yoga a lot, so that improves my flexibility on the hurdles.”
In the 800-meter run, it looked at first as though Soldotna senior Bree Mucha had won the girls race, as she edged junior teammate Kaillee Skjold by .32 seconds to win in 2:34.90.
“We were talking about leaning forward at the end,” Mucha said. “I was trying to go faster on the first lap by pushing it, but next time, we need to hold it longer.”
However, Mucha actually was the runner-up finisher, as Kenai senior Bailey Beeson toed the line in the first boys heat, finishing with a time of 2:19.46. Beeson ran with the boys in order to find a faster time, as they would push her harder.
“I practice with the boys every day, so it was just normal for me,” Beeson said.
Kenai senior Andrew Mole came away with the win in the 800, running a time of 2:11.97, and had to deal with wind gusts, just like everyone, down the backstretch.
“The way to deal with it is to keep your head down, try not to breathe it in, move your arms, because there’s not much else you can do,” Mole said.
“Today I just wanted to win the 800,” he said. “This being our final home track meet, it’s my senior year, so the emotions run high.”
