Kenai Central baseball opens with win over Kodiak

The Kenai Central baseball team opened its season with a 7-5 win over defending Northern Lights Conference champion Kodiak on Friday in Kodiak.

“Obviously, whenever you can start the season by defeating the defending conference champion, it’s a good thing,” Kenai coach John Kennedy said.

Robert Cockrell had a big game on offense for the Kardinals. With two outs in the second inning, he hit a ball to the outfield that was misplayed, allowing three runs to score. That gave the Kards a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. Cockrell also walked in the seventh for an RBI.

AJ Hull picked up the win for Kenai by departing with the lead after pitching the first two innings.

Kennedy said leadoff man Hector Rivera also was huge in the victory. Rivera was 1 for 1, but got on base every time up due to walks.

Saturday’s game was called due to rain with Kodiak leading 11-2 with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. As of now, there are no plans to make up the game.

Kennedy said the weather and field conditions Saturday were not good.

“It was interesting,” he said. “It took an hour and a half to get eight outs.”

The Kards need to play Kodiak twice for conference play, but Kennedy is not sure when or if the game will be made up.
