Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen, who has been to four Olympics, will host a series of biathlon clinics around the area in the upcoming weeks. The clinics are called the Jay Hakkinen 5 for 5 Biathlon Clinic.
Friday, Hakkinen will give a presentation on biathlon shooting technique and then will shoot biathlon rifles at biathlon targets. The event will start at 6 p.m. at the Snowshoe Gun Club in Kenai.
Saturday, Hakkinen will give a presentation on the training and skiing side of biathlon. This event will start at 10 a.m. The location will be announced at Friday’s shooting clinic.
On May 12, Hakkinen will put on a competition combining track sprinting with shooting a laser rifle.
“I am really looking forward to hosting this event because it is a new and intense biathlon format which is clearly the trend in Europe,” he wrote in a press release.
The competition will take place at 10 a.m. at Skyview High School.
“My goal with the races is to support the biathlon program on the Peninsula, and especially to encourage that a permanent biathlon range be built,” he wrote. “I feel it is my responsibility to do everything I can to help the future generation of biathletes in Alaska become Olympians.
“As I am working towards my 5th Olympics, I also feel it is time to start passing on what I have learned over the past 18 years since I started biathlon.”
