SoHi softball team tops Kenai

The visiting Soldotna softball team notched a 16-11 victory over Kenai Central on Monday in Northern Lights Conference action.

Soldotna improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Kards are 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The game was tied heading into the seventh and final inning. The Stars had six runs to take control of the game. Lagi Wong, Jordan Sedy and Serena Prior each had two RBIs in the final frame.

Soldotna coach Dave Cleveland said his team struggled again on defense, making 14 errors.

“Luckily, our bats were alive tonight,” he said.

Sedy was 4 for 5 with three runs, three RBIs and two doubles. Kaycee Munn was 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs. Wong was 3 for 5 with two runs, three RBIs and two doubles. Prior was 2 for 5.

Nikki Hegge pitched all seven innings. She struck out 11 and just four of her runs were earned.

“They played a good game,” Cleveland said of the Kards. “It was nice to get the first conference win under our belts.”

Kenai coach Mark King said his squad’s six errors were costly, but said in the end SoHi’s bats won out.

“It was really a hitter’s battle more than anything,” he said.

Havan Shaganoff was 3 for 4 with an RBI for Kenai, while Carly Norvelle had two hits and three RBIs. King said everybody contributed on offense.

Briana King pitched all seven innings for Kenai, striking out six. Mark King said about half of the runs were earned.

“It was a good confidence boost for the girls that have been playing for me for a few years,” King said. “Soldotna has always been a powerhouse. For us to hang with them for seven innings is a big plus.”
