Blackburn, O'Guinn, Kohler excel in college

Posted: May 7, 2012 - 6:58pm

Soldotna graduate Paige Blackburn, now a senior at the Air Force Academy, is continuing to stake her claim as one of the best throwers in the school’s history.

On April 20 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Blackburn tossed a career-best 174 feet, 8 inches, in the discus to move into second on the academy’s all-time list. Blackburn had been third on the all-time list.

She finished 14th in the 30-thrower “invitational” division, and was seventh amongst college throwers.

At the meet on April 19, Blackburn placed fourth in the women’s javelin, and second amongst collegiate competitors.

Blackburn kept on rolling at the Beach Invitational in Cerritos, Calif., on April 21. She threw 48 feet, 5.25 inches, to improve her personal distance by 5 inches. That toss moved her into second on the academy’s all-time shot put list.

O’Guinn makes national meet

University of Alaska Anchorage sophomore Ivy O’Guinn, a graduate of Skyview High School, beat a UAA record and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 24 to 26 in Pueblo, Colo., with a solid 1,500-meter run Saturday at the Occidental Invitational in Eagle Rock, Calif.

O’Guinn posted a time of 4 minutes, 25.19 seconds, to break her previous school record of 4:28.26. That time is the sixth-fastest in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history and an NCAA automatic time.

The GNAC named O’Guinn as the co-Athlete of the Week on Monday following the performance at the Occidental Invitational.

Kohler again named Pitcher of the Week

Larson Kohler of Concordia University in Portland, Ore., was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week in an announcement on April 30.

Kohler came on to record the final out and pick up a save in a 13-12 win over Oregon Tech. He came right back out to pitch a complete game to pick up the win in the second half of the doubleheader. He allowed just one run while scattering eight hits in a nine-inning performance. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in his fifth complete game of the season.

The two wins clinched a playoff berth for the Cavaliers in the NAIA West Region Tournament.
