Kenai baseball team defeats Soldotna

The host Kenai Central baseball team defeated Soldotna 6-2 on Monday in Southcentral Conference play.

The Kards moved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, while SoHi fell to 4-1 in the league and 4-2 overall, with both losses coming to Kenai.

Robert Cockrell pitched the first four innings for Kenai and gave up an unearned run. He gave up three hits and struck out three.

AJ Hull pitched the final three innings, giving up an unearned run. Hull gave up two hits and had a strikeout.

“The kids had resiliency and kept playing hard,” Kenai coach John Kennedy said. “There were a couple of times we could have lost our composure but we were able to play through our mistakes.”

Kennedy said the best example of that was the top of the sixth inning, when SoHi had two runners on but Kenai was able to get out of the inning with its first double play of the season.

Kenai took a 3-1 lead in the fifth and a 6-1 lead in the sixth. Soldotna scored a run in the seventh.

Kennedy said Soldotna starter Tyler Marcuson did a solid job on the mound. He said Marcuson lasted into the sixth inning and ended up giving up four runs. The other two were charged to Mitchel Daugherty.

Hector Rivera was 2 for 4 for Kenai, while Ethan Oliver was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Zack Mese was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Dallas Pierren was 1 for 1 with a run.

Kenai hosts Homer at 3 p.m. today.
