Kenai softball team gets win over Soldotna

The visiting Kenai Central softball team topped Soldotna 14-5 in six innings in Northern Lights Conference play Monday.

The Kards collected the program’s first victory against Soldotna. The Kards are 2-3 in the league and 2-5 overall, while SoHi falls to 2-1 and 5-3.

“Our girls today played like the team I’ve been waiting to see all season,” Kenai softball coach Mark King said. “We played clean defense. They are a good-hitting team and today they showed it.”

Briana King picked up the win on the mound, going six innings and striking out five.

The Kards were down 5-1 going into the third inning, but scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game.

“After the second inning, our defense just shined,” King said.

Hope Steffensen was 3 for 5, including an inside-the-park home run. Also for Kenai, King was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Havan Shaginoff was 2 for 4 and Morgan Wensley was 2 for 4.

Soldotna coach Dave Cleveland tipped his cap to Kenai. He said he never likes losing, but said the advancement of the Kenai program is good for softball in the area.

“We were hitting the ball, just right to them,” Cleveland said. “They hit it where we weren’t today.”

Nikki Hegge pitched all six innings for the Stars, striking out four.

“It’s a big win for us,” King said. “You could tell the confidence of the girls after the third inning was way up.”
