Kenai baseball gets past Soldotna

The visiting Kenai Central baseball team defeated Soldotna 14-6 on Monday in seven innings in Southcentral Conference action.

The Kardinals improved to 6-0 in the league and 7-0 overall.

While he is happy to be undefeated, Kenai coach John Kennedy said the one disappointing part of the game came in the fifth inning.

The Kards entered the bottom of the fifth up 14-2. However, three errors in a row cost Kenai a chance at the mercy rule.

“I told the kids that what was real frustrating was we had a chance to shut the game out in five innings and save some pitching arms,” Kennedy said. “In the fifth inning, we didn’t play that well, but give Soldotna credit for fighting, scoring runs and taking advantage to what we gave them.”

Dallas Pierren pitched the first three innings for Kenai, earning the win. He gave up two runs — none earned. He gave up four hits, struck out one and walked nobody.

Robert Cockrell pitched the next three innings, giving up four runs — three earned. He gave up seven hits, struck out one, and didn’t walk a batter.

AJ Hull relieved in the seventh inning with two runners on base. He got out of the jam in five pitches — a double play and a strikeout.

On offense for the Kardinals, Ethan Oliver was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, Hull was 2 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run, Alex Nason was 2 for 5 with a run and his first double, and Pierren was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

The Kardinals take their undefeated record to Homer for a 4 p.m. game today.
