SoHi softball tops Kenai in a slugfest

The visiting Soldotna softball team defeated Kenai Central 25-18 in a seven-inning Northern Lights Conference game Monday.

The game went all seven innings.

Kaycee Munn had a monster game for the Stars, hitting two home runs over the fence. Munn came to the plate seven times and reached base all seven times, walking four times. She had eight RBIs.

Nikki Hegge pitched the whole game for the Stars. Coach Dave Cleveland said only eight of Hegge’s 18 runs were earned. She struck out eight and walked 10. SoHi had 15 errors behind her.

“Both offenses were cranked up tonight,” Cleveland said. “We made a couple more plays than they did, but it was a good, hard-fought game.”

The Stars had just lost to Kenai last week and are 2-1 against the Kardinals this year.

“We knew it would be tough coming in,” Cleveland said. “We’ve been looking forward to this game since last week.

“Yeah, we gave up a few more runs than we would like, but when you can score 25 runs, it makes up for it.”

SoHi led 6-0 after the first 1 1-2 innings, but Kenai scored nine in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

By the end of the third inning, the game was tied at 10.

SoHi took control of the game by getting six runs in the fourth inning. The Stars led 17-13 after the fifth inning, and 20-14 after the sixth inning.

Briana King pitched the first five innings for the Kardinals, then Havan Shaginoff took over for the rest of the game.

The Stars play Skyview at the Soldotna Little League fields today at 4 p.m.

Wednesday, Kenai hosts Skyview at 6 p.m. and SoHi hosts Homer at 6 p.m.
