Bird Homestead opens with Hordeman tourney

Posted: May 17, 2012 - 9:11pm

Bird Homestead Golf Course, at Mile 11.8 Funny River Road, is open for the season.

Our opening day was May 12. We held the Mark Hordeman tournament and 30 people showed up to kick off  the season. They were hardy souls as when they started there was a nice layer of hail on the course and especially on the greens.

Then it poured down rain.

Then I saw a flash of light, and the loud vibrating bang after that would have scared off most, but remember we are in Alaska.

Then there were some sprinkles and by the time they were done there was some welcome sun.

We are hoping that is not a preview of the summer to come. The tournament was played with a men’s night format.  Sissy Bird won women’s long drive, JE Wells banged a long one for men’s long drive, Roy Bird was closest to the pin on No. 6 and Justin Richmond picked up the money on No. 8.

First-place team, with 1-over, was Jeff Adamac, Richard Harman and the birthday boy Mark Hordeman. He didn’t tell me how old he was but says he is real close to senior rates.

There was a chip-off between two teams with 2-over and Duane Tachick did the job for his team with Trevor Hordeman and Ed Marshall, leaving Roy Bird, Dave Kimura and Tommy Sigurdsson to take home third place. Pure birdie was left on the table so it will be there for the men’s night crew to try for.

Men’s night will start Tuesday with tee-off at 6:30. Wednesday at 10 a.m. is for seniors and those who just want to get out and enjoy a round of golf. We are going to try Wednesday night at 6 p.m. for the women. Please try to arrive at the golf course 15 minutes prior to tee times, give us a call if you are going to be any later than that so we can go ahead with the blind draw.  New golfers are invited to join in on the fun as most of these events are blind-draw scrambles, so it gives you a chance to pick up some tips and get used to the game of golf.

We are building a new clubhouse, which will double our space and we will have sandwiches for our golfers. I am really looking forward to the added space. The labor has all been donated so far and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Over the years Elmer has helped many a friend and neighbor and even several total strangers with projects. But I never expected us to be on the receiving end and it really makes me think of the old days when everyone just showed up and helped wherever they could. I love the American way.

The Bird Homestead Golf Association will be holding its first meeting of the year Saturday at 1 p.m. at the clubhouse. New members are welcome. If you like the laid-back feeling, you will love it out at Funny River. Enjoy yourselves out on the great courses we have on the peninsula.
