Former Oilers go during draft's 1st day

Two former Peninsula Oilers were selected in the compensation round of the 2012 baseball draft Monday by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Stanford junior Stephen Piscotty, who played for the Oilers in 2010, was taken No. 36 overall. St. Mary’s junior Patrick Wisdom, who played for the Oilers in 2010 and 2011, was taken with the 52nd pick.

The selection of the duo marks the first time since the 2005 draft that a former Oilers player has been selected as high as the compensation round. That year, outfielder Travis Buck, who played for the Oilers in 2003, was taken with the 36th pick. Buck has played for the Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians, and currently is with the Houston Astros.

Just three years earlier, Mark Teahen, who played for the Oilers in 2001, was selected in the compensation round with the 39th overall pick. Teahen eventually broke into the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals.

The last Oilers player to be drafted in the first round, according to research by Oilers board member Mike Baxter, was Kenny Baugh in the 2001 draft. Baugh, who was taken No. 11 overall, played for the Oilers in 1998. He never made it to the major leagues.

In 2010, Piscotty hit .289 in Alaska Baseball League play. He also tied with Wisdom for the team lead in RBI with 24.

In three years at Stanford, Piscotty has a .336 career average, with 131 RBI. He won the Cape Cod summer league batting title in 2011.

In 2010, Wisdom hit .229 in league play. He led the league that year with seven home runs.

In 2011, Wisdom hit .264 in helping to lead the Oilers to an ABL crown. He tied for the league lead with four home runs, and led the ABL with 26 RBI.
