Kenai Golf Report: Many work to keep course in shape

Posted: June 5, 2012 - 10:56pm

W

e’re off to a great start at the Kenai Golf Course. The greens are greening up and getting fuller. All the greens have been slit-seeded and over-seeded. No. 14 is NOT a temporary green. It really looks nice.

Our biggest problem is hole No. 10. However it is starting to fill in. We will continue to work on it until it fills in completely. A good dose of sunshine and summer heat will do us a lot of good.

The fairways are in outstanding condition. Doug Haralson has been mowing them once a week for the last three weeks. He is doing an excellent job. Charlie Waguespack is now mowing the rough. It has finally grown long enough to mow. Good definition can now be seen in all areas. Thank you, Charlie, and welcome back.

The left-hand side of No. 13 has been seeded. We should see a real difference in that area soon. Work has begun on the right-hand side of No. 2. Shane Zimmerman has covered a group of stumps in that area and will continue to work on the area until all stumps are covered. It looks really nice.

When we finish you will no longer be blocked from the green on shots into the green. We are still cutting up fallen trees and piling up branches from the winter winds. This process will continue all year. What a chore. Jerry Norris has his work cut out for him.

Dwight Kramer is working on our new practice area. Dusty and Willie will soon plug and top-dress and over-seed that area. Thank you, Dwight, for all your hard work. It is amazing how long it takes to get a new area in good shape.

Senior League (May 31)

A great time was had by all at this event. Thank you, Jerry Norris, for continuing to do such a great job with this program. The Senior League plays every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. At the May 31 event Gordon Griffin won low gross with a 39. Jim Bradford won low net with a 35. Gordon Griffin was closest to the pin on No. 5. If you would like more information on this event, contact the clubhouse or Jerry Norris.
