The Peninsula Oilers broke open a tight game with a five-run seventh inning to beat the Mat-Su Miners 7-2 on Saturday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.
The Oilers face the Miners in Alaska Baseball League play again today at 2 p.m. The Oilers are now 4-1 in league play while the Miners are 0-2.
Jordan Mills picked up the win for the Oilers, going seven innings and giving up two runs on seven hits. Mills struck out seven.
Jay Calhoun also turned in a solid start for the Miners, going six innings and giving up two runs on three hits. Calhoun struck out two.
The big difference in the game was the bullpen. Logan McAnallen and Nigel Nootbaar both pitched scoreless innings in relief for the Oilers.
Two Miners relievers came on in the seventh inning and failed to record an out. Jimmy Reed gave up one run and Steve Casey gave up one run. Tanner Anderson gave up the other three runs in the seventh inning.
Alex Staehely and Riley Heinzer each had two hits for the Oilers. Jeff Yamaguchi added a home run, while Josh Miller had two RBI.
