Twins split with Chugiak

The Post 20 Twins split a doubleheader at host Chugiak on Sunday.

In the first game — the league contest — the Twins won 14-4 in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Chugiak took the second game 18-3 in five innings.

The Twins are now 4-1 in the league and 7-3 overall.

Brandon Mahle started and got the game ball for the Twins in the first game.

“At the beginning, he was a little out of the strike zone,” Twins assistant coach Hector Rivera said. “He took care of business and made the adjustments.”

Mahle pitched four innings and walked six while striking out four. He gave up one hit and three runs — two earned.

AJ Hull pitched the final inning and gave up one earned run on three hits.

For the Twins on offense, Brian Rowe was 2 for 3 with a run, stolen base and three RBI, Hull was 2 for 4 with a run, stolen base and two RBI, Mitchell Thompson was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, Hector Rivera was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, Robert Cockrell was 2 for 2 with three RBI, and Shayne Miller was 2 for 3 with two RBI.

“Everybody hit,” coach Rivera said of the 14-hit performance.

The Mustangs took control early in the second game. Hull started and lasted just 1 1-3 innings in picking up the loss. He gave up seven runs while walking five.

“We gave up a bunch of bases on balls, couldn’t hit the strike zone and made a couple errors,” coach Rivera said.

Max Hegge was 3 for 3, while Ben Barton was 1 for 2 and Justin Wisnewski was 1 for 2 with two RBI.

Chugiak had 11 hits, while the Twins had six.

Kenai will travel to Anchorage Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader against Service.
