Oilers take over 1st place in ABL

Peninsula bats stay hot vs. Miners

The Peninsula Oilers moved into first place in the Alaska Baseball League with a 9-1 victory over the Mat-Su Miners on Monday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers have now taken the first three games of a four-game set against the Miners. Peninsula goes for the sweep today at 6 p.m. at Seymour Park.

Peninsula is now 6-1 in the league. Chugiak lost its first game of the year Monday night and is now 3-1 and in second place. The Miners are now 0-4 in the league.

The Oilers continue to pound Miners pitching. Peninsula has averaged eight runs per contest against Mat-Su this year.

That offensive onslaught was more than enough for starter Jon Maciel as he moved to 2-0 in the league this year. Maciel pitched eight innings and threw 99 pitches. He gave up five hits and no runs while striking out six and walking one.

“I threw a lot of fastballs,” Maciel said in a postgame interview on 1140 AM. “I was just aggressive in the zone. I was able to make some pitches when I needed to.”

Two Oilers had home runs, meaning five different players have now gone yard this season.

Jimmie Koch hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Oilers a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The home run came off of Miners starter and loser Clint Freeman, who lasted just four innings and gave up 10 hits and five runs.

“I got ahead of him,” Koch said on 1140 AM. “I got a good pitch to hit and just swung.”

The other home run came from Alex Staehely in the eight inning. The two-run bomb put the Oilers up 9-0.

Staehely finished 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. Five different Oilers had two hits, led by Nate Ring’s 2 for 3 day with two runs and two RBI. Ring now leads the ABL with nine RBI.

Others with two hits for the Oilers were Jake Alvarez, Josh Miller, Trey Richardson and Nigel Nootbaar.
