Blackburn finishes 22nd at trials

Paige Blackburn, a Soldotna High School graduate and a recent graduate of the Air Force Academy, finished 22nd in the javelin in the preliminary round at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., on Friday.

The finish did not qualify Blackburn for the finals of the event, but she will still compete in the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico, next weekend.

Blackburn fouled on her first attempt before recording distances of 146 feet, 9 inches, and 151—9. Kara Patterson had the top throw at 198—5.

Blackburn is the most-recent Mountain West champion in the javelin. Her personal best is 170—5. Dana Pounds-Lyon, a two-time NCAA champion for Air Force, advanced to the finals with a throw of 170—0. That mark put her 10th.
