Oilers lose to Chinooks on walkoff homer

Peninsula falls from 1st place in ABL after coming back to take lead in ninth

Posted: June 30, 2012 - 11:21pm

The host Chugiak Chinooks defeated the Peninsula Oilers 6-5 on Saturday on a walkoff, two-run home run by Adam Humes.
The Chinooks improved to 8-5 in the Alaska Baseball League with the victory and moved into first place. The Oilers are 9-7 and are in second place in the league, a half game behind the Chinooks.
The Oilers had come back from a 4-2 deficit in the top of the ninth inning. Peninsula scored three runs in the ninth to take a 5-4 lead.
Louis Cohen came on for the Oilers in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Cohen retired the first two batters, but Jeffrey Turbin singled with two outs. Humes then ended the game with his blast.
The Oilers were able to get 14 hits in the game, but also left 14 runners on base.
Josh Miller, Alex Staehely, Trey Richardson, Oscar Sanay and Frank Martinez all had two hits for the Oilers.
On Friday, Jon Maciel put the Oilers in position to earn a 2-2 split in the series with the Bucs by turning in a solid start on the mound. Maciel pitched 7 innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
He left with a 6-2 lead and the Oilers bullpen made that stand up. Kyle Ferramola and Louis Cohen each pitched scoreless innings.
The Oilers banged out 11 hits in scoring the seven runs.
Peninsula grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning off Bucs starter and loser Tanner Kichler. Staehely doubled to score Jordon Hein.
After the Bucs tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, the Oilers took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Miller singled and Jimmie Koch blasted a home run.
The Oilers made it 5-1 in the top of the sixth. With one out, Riley Heinzer and Miller singled, the Koch doubled to score both runners.
The Oilers added their final run in the seventh, when Oscar Sanay singled to score Hein.
Koch finished 3 for 3 with four RBI, while Hein, Staehely and Miller each had two hits.
The Oilers stay on the road to face the Mat-Su Miners at 2 p.m. today.
