Kenai's Back Door Lounge wins Firecracker Invitational

The Back Door Lounge of Kenai won the Combined A and B Coed Division on Saturday at the Kenai Firecracker Invitational on Saturday at the Kenai Ballfields.

The softball squad finished 5-0 at the tournament. Because Back Door was a B team, it was supposed to be spotted six runs in games against the A teams. Back Door was able to beat all the A teams straight up.

“We just got hot,” said Back Door manager Beau Manley. “It was one of those things.

“We went to a tournament a few weeks ago and could not hit. It was one of the worst displays of hitting I’ve seen since I started doing this.”

Back Door defeated Lawn and Order of Anchorage 18-8 in the title game. Lawn and Order is an A team.

“We played really good defense,” Manley said. “Teams tense up when they see good defense. I know, because that happens to us.”

Manley said a measure of how well his team was playing came from the undefeated record.

“I feel like you can never get enough runs when you get to this level,” he said. “These A and B teams have such good hitters. If they ignite and explode, they can easily get 10 runs in an inning.”

The Back Door earned a number of awards after the tournament. Tommy Brown was the men’s MVP, hitting .789 with four home runs. He had nine RBI in the title game. The women’s MVP was Megan Smith, with a .720 average.

Also on the all-tourney team were Cassie Boze (.666), Rosie McAulliffe (.560), Kirby Houchin (.789, four home runs) and Mike Navarre (.740).

Manley said many other players contributed to the win. He said Willie Castillo played great defense at shortstop, and also hit a home run. Celeste Goff had a key hit that scored the go-ahead run against Ninjas of Anchorage. That victory moved Back Door to the championship game.
