The Chugiak Chinooks spoiled the Fourth of July at Coral Seymour Memorial Park on Wednesday with a 9-1 victory over the Peninsula Oilers in Alaska Baseball League play.
The Chinooks and Anchorage Glacier Pilots are now tied at the top of the league standings with 10-7 records. The Anchorage Bucs, at 9-7, are a half game out of first, while the Oilers, at 10-9, are a game back.
The same two teams meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the second game of a four-game series. The Oilers will be looking to snap a two-game skid.
The Chinooks were able to get to Oilers starter Jon Maciel and tag him with his first loss of the league season. Maciel fell to 3-1.
There was trouble for Maciel from the beginning as he walked the first batter of the game after walking only one player in ABL play coming into the game. Chugiak would go on to take a 2-0 lead after the first and never look back.
Maciel would last four innings and give up six hits and four runs — three earned.
The Chinooks had 11 hits in the game, and got home runs from Adam Humes and Kristopher Kwak. Kwak finished 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI.
Meanwhile, the Oilers were never able to solve Chinooks starter and winner Clint Manzo. Manzo went eight innings and gave up three hits and just one earned run.
The run came in the seventh, when Alex Staehely doubled, stole third and scored on a grounder by Trey Richardson.
