A roundup of Peninsula prep coaching changes

Posted: July 5, 2012 - 11:48pm

Here’s a look at some of the other coaching changes at Kenai Peninsula high schools:

Soldotna High School

In addition to Lucas Petersen taking over for Sohail Marey in the swimming and diving program and Guy Hayes stepping down as co-coach of the softball team, Galen Brantley Jr. is stepping down as athletic director in favor of Matt Johnson.

Brantley Jr., who will continue to teach and coach football at Soldotna, said he stepped down as athletic director because he wants to spend more time with his three children.

Johnson will continue as boys basketball coach.

“There were too many nights where my son was at a hockey tournament in Fairbanks and I was running a hockey tournament at the (Soldotna) Sports Center,” Brantley Jr. said. “I enjoyed my experience and there is not a better administration to work for.”

Kenai Central High School

At Kenai Central, Teri Ostrander will take over the cross-country running program from D’Anna Gibson, while junior varsity volleyball coach Tracie Beck will step up into head coach John Kennedy’s spot.

Nikiski High School

Dylan Hooper, the athletic director at Nikiski, said he only knows about one head-coaching change at this point. Stacey Segura is being elevated to head volleyball coach.

Amber Oliva-Douglas is stepping down as the volleyball coach. Oliva-Douglas at one time played for the Bulldogs. Segura, then Stacey Griffel, also played volleyball for Nikiski.

Skyview High School

Kent Peterson will continue to be the athletic director. He stepped in for Eric Pomerleau during the just-completed school year.

Peterson said the only head-coaching change at this point is that Cassie Boze, who has been in the program a few years, will take over for Stephanie Blair.

Cook Inlet Academy

Rick Musgrove, the athletic director, said the one coaching change at this point is that Lindsay Keener will step down as volleyball coach. There is no replacement at this time.

Seward High School

Dan and Lori Krier are leaving their athletic posts at Seward.

Dan was the head basketball coach and athletic director. Lori coached the track and field team. Sami King is coming from Kodiak High School to take over as athletic director and track and field coach.

Curtis Berry is stepping down as the girls basketball coach and will become the boys basketball head coach.

The girls head coach is not yet known.

Homer High School

Pam Newton, the athletic director at Homer, said changes are still up in the air.

Ninilchik

Principal Jeff Ambrosier said the only certain coaching change at this point is in volleyball. Michelle Michener is moving to Texas. The new volleyball position should be posted in August.
