Oilers down Chinooks, take 3rd straight

Mills moves to 3-1, Peninsula moves into 1st-place tie

Posted: July 7, 2012 - 11:02pm

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Chugiak Chinooks 6-3 on Saturday night at Coral Seymour Memorial Park to move into a tie for first place in the Alaska Baseball League.

The Oilers, winners of three straight, and Anchorage Glacier Pilots are tied for first. The Pilots are at 11-7, while the Oilers are at 13-9. Chugiak and the Anchorage Bucs are tied for third at 10-10, two games behind the Pilots and Oilers.

The Oilers now begin a strange week. The club has today and Monday off before playing games at Chugiak at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After playing a doubleheader at the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Thursday at 5 p.m., the Oilers have Friday and Saturday off before playing a 4 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at Seymour Park on Sunday.

Jordan Mills picked up the win Saturday to improve to 3-1 in the league. He pitched the first six innings and gave up six hits and two earned runs. Mills walked one and struck out six.

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a home run by Trey Richardson.

The Chinooks came back to tie the game in the top of the third, but the Oilers then scored five runs in the pivotal fourth inning to take control of the game.

The inning started with Richardson, Jimmie Koch and Riley Heinzer walking to load the bases. Jeff Yamaguchi then worked a full count before doubling on a high curveball to score two runs. Jake Alvarez and Nate Ring then each singled to move the score to 5-1.

The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Delph.

The ever-dangerous Chinooks tried to battle back, scoring a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh.

Louis Cohen ended up pitching the final two innings for the save.
