Oilers splits doubleheader against Pilots

Posted: July 12, 2012 - 11:10pm

Tied atop the Alaska Baseball League standings with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, the Peninsula Oilers knew they had to win both games of their Thursday night doubleheader to grab a solid lead.
They ended up splitting the doubleheader, which still leaves them tied.
The Oilers won the first game of the evening 4-2, but dropped the second game 5-2. Both games were seven innings.
Peninsula rallied back from a deficit in the first game to post the 4-2 win.
Scoring a run each in the third and fourth innings, the Glacier Pilots looked ready to take the ABL lead, but the Oilers tied it up in the fifth inning off a single hit by Alex Staehely that scored the tying run from Ring. Jordan Hein scored the Oilers first run off an error from the Pilots third baseman.
With Heinzer at bat, Josh Miller scored a run on a passed ball, and Heinzer hit a single to bring Staehely home.
Nigel Nootbaar got the save, pitching 3 1-3 innings and giving up only one hit and striking out two. Jordan Mills pitched 3 2-3 innings, giving up four hits, two runs and four strikeouts.
Jeff Yamaguchi hit 2 for 3 to lead the Oilers.
The win put the Oilers temporarily in the ABL lead.
The second game did not turn out as planned, as the Pilots used a grand slam from Tyler Spoon in the third inning to take the 5-2 win and keep the standings knotted up.
Peninsula’s Jordan Hein scored off of Miller’s double at the top of the inning, and Miller ended up getting a run on a putout by Josh Delph.
Frank Martinez and Jordon Hein both hit 2 for 3 in the second game, with Hein also scoring a run. Staehely hit 2 for 4, which now bumps up his batting average to .352 this season.
Michael Coates pitched his way to the loss, giving up four hits, four runs and four errors, and one strikeout. Logan McAnallen pitched one inning and recorded two strikeouts.
The Oilers now sport a 16-10 record and, of course, are tied with the Glacier Pilots for the ABL lead. The Anchorage Bucs and the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks are tied for third, four games back.
The Oilers take Friday and Saturday off before returning to Coral Seymour Memorial Park for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against the Pilots on Sunday.
