North wins ABL All-Star Game; All-League team announced

The North Team defeated the South Team 6-4 on Sunday in the Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game at Mulcahy Park in Anchorage.


The North Team was made up of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, Anchorage Bucs and Peninsula Oilers. The South Team is made up of the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks, the Chugiak Chinooks and the Mat-Su Miners.

All the teams from the North are over .500 in the league, while the South teams are under .500. The North had six runs on 10 hits, while the South had four runs on eight hits. Both teams made an error.

From the Oilers, John Straka, Jordan Mills, Jon Maciel, Nigel Nootbaar and Logan McAnallen were pitchers for the North, while Riley Reinzer, Josh Miller and Alex Staehely were field players.

Earlier in the day, Zach Mathieu of the Bucs on the Home Run Derby with 13 home runs.

The Alaska Baseball League All-League teams also were announced Sunday.

The lone Oilers player to win a major award was Alex Staehely. He picked up the Gold Glove award at shortstop.

Chase Compton of the Bucs was named the Player of the Year and the Silver Slugger, while Braden Shipley of the Bucs was the Top Prospect.

The Coaching Staffs of the Year were from the Bucs and Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers put four players on the first team, and three were pitchers. Starting pitchers Jordan Mills and Jon Maciel both made it, as did reliever John Straka.

Josh Miller made the first team at second base.

The Oilers added three players on the second team. Trey Richardson made it at first base, Staehely made it at shortstop and Nigel Nootbaar made it as a utility player.
