Oilers split doubleheader against Fairbanks

Posted: July 24, 2012 - 11:53pm

The Peninsula Oilers managed to split a doubleheader on the road against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Tuesday at Growden Memorial Park. Peninsula lost the first game 6-4, but came back to win the second 5-1. Both games were seven innings.
The decision keeps the Oilers, now holding a 19-16 record, second in the Alaska Baseball League standings, 4.5 games back of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots (23-11), and complete their road trip tomorrow at 7 p.m. against the Goldpanners. The Anchorage Bucs (18-16) are sitting third in the ABL standings, five games back of the Pilots.
In the first game, the Oilers racked up 10 hits to the Panners’ six, but ended up with the loss due to a four-run fourth inning from Fairbanks.
Paul Politi scored off a single from Matt Nadolski, Joey Epperson scored off a walk from Chad Carrol with loaded bases, and Kurt Schlangen and Nadolski both scored runs off Brady Renner’s single to complete the inning.
The Oilers had three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to close the gap, but that was all they managed.
Josh Delph scored off a wild pitch in the sixth inning to put the Oilers on the board, and Josh Miller scored a run off of Garrett Stubbs’ single. Jeff Yamaguchi also had a run when the catcher missed a pitch.
Miller ended up hitting 3 for 4 with one run and RBI, Yamaguchi hit 2 for 2 with one run and two walks, and Stubbs went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Jordan Mills pitched 3-2/3 innings in the loss, giving up four hits and striking out three. Louis Cohen also pitched, going 2-1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
In the second game, Trey Richardson nailed a home run in the third inning to put the first points up for the Oilers, and Yamaguchi scored a run on an error from the Goldpanners’ second baseman to put the Oilers up 2-0.
Peninsula scored a run in the sixth inning, and two more in the seventh to put the game away, as Alex Staehely hit a two-RBI single. Nate Ring hit 2 for 4 with one run to lead the team, and Jordan Hein went 1 for 2 with a run.
Michael Coates received the win for the Oilers, pitching five innings with only two hits and four strikeouts.
After Wednesday’s contest against the Goldpanners, Peninsula will finish out the season with four straight home games against the Anchorage Bucs.
