Panners steal win from Oilers in extra innings

Glacier Pilots clinch ABL title

Posted: July 25, 2012 - 11:37pm

The Peninsula Oilers had a victory in their sights in the late innings of their match against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Wednesday. Up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, all they needed was three outs.
That changed when the Goldpanners scored three runs to force extra innings, and a single by Kurt Schlangen brought home the winning run in the tenth inning for the 4-3 victory for Fairbanks at Growden Memorial Park.
Even with the loss, Peninsula is still second in the Alaska Baseball League standings, a half game ahead of the Anchorage Bucs, but is eliminated from ABL title contention. The Anchorage Glacier Pilots clinched the ABL title with five games left on their schedule, holding a 23-12 record, opposed to a 19-17 record for the Oilers. The Pilots lost their game Wednesday 7-4 to the Chinooks.
Nate Ring hit a double in the fifth inning to score two runs from Jordan Hein and Garrett Stubbs, and Josh Delph scored a run in the eighth when Josh Miller hit a single.
Those runs did not stand up in the ninth, as Paul Politi and Matt Nodalski scored runs off Schlangen’s single with John Straka of the Oilers pitching. Nigel Nootbaar stepped in for Straka, but gave up the tying run with a wild pitch, which allowed Schlangen to score.
In the tenth inning, the Oilers went three and out, and Fairbanks’ Kevin Casey scored the winning run to end the game.
Jon Maciel pitched seven innings for the Oilers, giving up five hits but striking out five players. Hein hit 2 for 3 with a run, Ring went 2 for 5 with two RBI, and Josh Miller hit 3 for 5.
Both teams hit well, with the Oilers racking up 11 hits and Fairbanks getting 13 hits.
The Pilots lead the ABL standings by 4.5 games over the Oilers, but even if they were to lose their last five games, and the Oilers win their final four, the standings would be deadlocked in a tie. The Pilots own the tiebreaker on the season series against Peninsula, which they own 6-2.
The Oilers have four games left, all home contests against the Bucs, starting Friday at 6 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. As mentioned, the Bucs are within a half-game of the Oilers for the runner-up spot in the ABL standings.
