Eagle River upsets Twins at state

The Post 20 Twins, the top seed, were upset 6-0 by Eagle River in the American Legion AA State Tournament on Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Twins are now one loss away from being eliminated from the tournament. They take on West at noon today at Mulcahy Park.

Eagle River, the No. 8 seed, got a complete game shutout from David Fuller. Fuller had not pitched in about three weeks due to a broken thumb, but he showed no rust Saturday in leading Eagle River to its first win in six tries against the Twins this year.

He gave up five hits while walking six and striking out six. Eagle River also played errorless ball behind him.

“He threw a great game,” Twins assistant Hector Rivera said.

Rivera said the Twins were flat in the game after leaving town on Thursday morning to attend the opening banquet and ceremonies. Post 20 then had Friday off due to being the top seed.

“The kids were just flat,” Rivera said. “They had too much time off.”

Post 20 also was not sharp in the field, committing three errors.

Brandon Mahle took the loss, going 5 2-3 innings while giving up seven hits and five runs — two of which were earned. He walked three and struck out two.

Ethan Oliver then gave up one earned run in three innings, and Dallas Pierren pitched a scoreless one-third of an inning.

Kyle Frost led Eagle River at the plate by going 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Chris Parker and Fuller also scored two runs for Eagle River.

For the Twins, Hector Rivera and Shayne Miller had two hits, while AJ Hull had one hit.

Assistant coach Rivera said he thinks the Twins could still make a run in the tourney.

“It’s pretty much their choice,” he said. “They need to outsmart their opponents, minimize their mistakes and beat them.”
