Stars cruise past Ketchikan

Ketchikan High School’s Triston Green is swarmed by Soldotna High School defenders in the first quarter of Saturday’s game.

The Soldotna football team cruised to a 70-0 victory over Ketchikan on Saturday in nonconference play at Justin Maile Field in Soldotna.

The Stars improved to 1-1 overall while the Kings fell to 0-2 overall. Soldotna jumps into Northern Lights Conference play at 6:30 p.m. Friday when the Stars travel to rival Skyview.

Soldotna jumped out to a 42-0 lead after the first quarter against the Kings. Reid Schmelzenbach had a pair of scores in the first quarter, while Drew Gibbs and Colton Young also ran for scores. Noah Fowler also had two touchdown passes in the first quarter, one to Young and the other to Zane Miller.

Both Soldotna and Ketchikan are in the medium-schools division, but the programs are at different levels of development.

“They are a developing program,” Soldotna coach Galen Brantley Jr. said. “Our kids did some nice things, but it was kind of a tough game.”

Brantley Jr. said he took his starters out with about four minutes left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Ty Fenton returned an interception return for a touchdown and Zach Hallford ran for a touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, Jared Chavez and Hunter Lott ran for touchdowns.

Brantley Jr. said there were some bright spots in the game, like the play of junior varsity running back and outside linebacker Fenton.

“Ty Fenton had a pretty good game,” Brantley Jr. said. “He made a couple nice runs and returned an interception for a touchdown. He also was really good on kickoff coverage.”
