The Seward football team picked up its first victory of the year Friday by defeating Thunder Mountain’s junior varsity squad 33-30 in Juneau.
The Seahawks (2-1 overall) trailed 18-13 at halftime, but Dezmond Smith scored on a 3-yard run with 1:20 left in the third quarter for a 21-18 lead.
Shayne Brown came right back with a 60-yard TD reception for Thunder Mountain, but Smith scored on a 10-yard run with 20 seconds left in the third for a 27-24 lead.
With 10:15 left in the game, Blake Phillips scored on an 11-yard run for Thunder Mountain for a 30-27 lead, but Smith scored with 2:04 left on a 15-yard run for a 33-30 lead.
Seward’s defense held Thunder Mountain to a four-and-out, then the Seahawks ran out the clock.
