Posted: August 25, 2012 - 10:36pm

The Soldotna volleyball team took third place in the Chugiak Invitational on Saturday in Chugiak.

The tournament included 13 of the biggest and best schools in Alaska.

The Stars went 3-1 in pool play Friday, defeating East, Colony and Chugiak, and losing to South.

That performance made South the No. 4 seed in the gold bracket Saturday. The Stars started with a 20-14, 20-12 victory over Grace Christian, then beat top-seeded Dimond 20-16, 20-16. The Stars then dropped a match to South, 20-14, 20-13.

Soldotna then played Dimond again, losing 20-11, 16-20, 15-10 to take third place.

There were only eight players named to the all-tournament team. SoHi’s Kaillee Skjold was one of those eight.

Skyview wins Pritchard Memorial Tournament

The Skyview volleyball team won the Shayna Pritchard Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Nikiski.

The Panthers topped Nikiski in the championship in two games.

“I look at it as the preseason,” Skyview coach Sheila Kupferschmid said. “It’s not full matches yet. It’s helps me figure out the lineup and gives me an opportunity to look at all the kids.”

The coach said the tourney was especially valuable for sophomore setter Hayley Ramsell, who saw her first varsity action.

“It was a great confidence builder for the kids, and a good opportunity for the setter to get her feet wet,” Kupferschmid said.

Nikiski coach Stacey Segura said it was the Bulldogs’ first trip to the Pritchard title game in five years.

“The girls played a pretty good tournament,” she said. “I’m pretty proud of them. We were physically ready for Skyview, but we weren’t mentally ready.

“Mentally, we haven’t been in that situation in awhile. It caught us off guard.”

Skyview’s Marlee Cunningham was the MVP, while Cheyanne Laber and Sam Reynolds made the all-tournament team for the Panthers.

Bailey Buchholz and Rachel Thompson made the all-tournament team for Nikiski.

Kenai Central finished fifth at the tournament.

Seward tops Homer

Seward and Homer opened play in the Southcentral Conference with a match in Seward on Saturday. The Seahawks notched a 25-21, 25-21, 25-10 victory.
