Summer slowly slipping away after Memorial Tourney

Posted: September 5, 2012 - 7:49pm

It was nice to sit around and talk with old friends about those who have passed on. It was also nice remember all the good times we had together. It is also nice to recognize the contributions made by those individuals to our golf course and to our community, as I outlined in my column last week.
The Memorial Tournament did all those things last weekend. Many door prizes were donated in their honor. The Navarre Family donated a new set of irons in honor of Rita Botelho and George Navarre. John Groeneveld donated gift certificates in honor of his brother Bill Groeneveld, who recently passed away. We would like to thank them for their support of this event. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Memorial Tournament.
In the Memorial Tournament, Gordon Griffin was the gross champion with a two-day total of 161. Chris Murray was second gross with a total of 162, followed by Mark Griffin with a gross of 164. Chris Murray was the net champion with a two-day net score of 146, followed by Mark Griffin with a net of 152. Tied for third were Pedro McCall and Keith Stuart with nets of 153. Pedro won in a card back. The gross side pot on Saturday was won by Mark Griffin with a score of 81, and Sunday’s gross side pot was won by Gordon Griffin with a 78. Closest to the pin on Saturday on hole #5 was won by Chris Murray with a shot of 22’11-1/2”. This also won Sunday because there was a carryover from Saturday. On hole #9, Gordon Griffin was the winner with a shot of 9’10”. This also won Sunday’s contest because this was a carryover. Hole #10 on Saturday was won by Chris Murray with a shot of 10’6”. He also won hole #14 on Saturday with a shot of 13’6-1/2”. Chris also won the closest to the 2nd shot on hole #7 with a shot of 32’11”. On Sunday, hole #10 was won by Tyler Yamada with a shot of 11’1/2”. Hole #14 was won by Ken Liedes with a shot of 21’. On the hole #4, Ken also won with a shot of 11’1/2” on his second shot. Skins on Saturday were won by Mark Griffin, Tyler Yamada, Chris Murray, and Dave Kierkvleit, each with one skin. On Sunday, Chris Murray had two skins, and Pedro McCall, Gordon Griffin, Tyler Yamada and Dave Kierkvleit each had one skin.
This weekend the Kenai Open will be held at the Kenai Golf Course. Mike Navarre and his company have made a big donation for this tournament. Major door prizes for this weekend include a full set of new Callaway irons, a Callaway Golf Bag, and Callaway Golf Balls. Many other prizes will also be given away. This is one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year. In addition to the door prizes, the top three winners in each division, depending on the number of participants, will receive the biggest prizes of the season. The Kenai Open is also the last counted tournament in the Atigun Season Points race. The Atigun Cup Playoffs will begin next week. I would like to encourage everyone to come out and participate in this event. If you would like more information, please contact the clubhouse.

I would again like to thank all the people who helped plug, overseed, and top dress our greens this past week. I failed to mention in my last column two very important people: Andy Anderson, who spent the entire three days dragging our greens filling each and every hole with as much sand as possible. Dwight Kramer worked tirelessly with a shovel in his hand, removing the plugs from the greens. I am sorry, guys, for not mentioning you last week.
September is a very busy and special month for all of us at the Kenai Golf Course. We encourage everyone to come out and participate in all the events we have planned. If you have any questions, please contact the clubhouse any time during business hours.
As always, see you on the course.
