Ostrander wins again

Posted: September 8, 2012 - 11:11pm

PALMER — Audrey Michaelson has spent much of the last few years of her high school cross-country running career at or near the front of the pack. But the Colony senior doesn’t always get there the same way.
Despite spending the first mile as far back as sixth place, Michaelson used a late effort to post a runner-up finish during the 4A girls race of the Palmer Invitational on the Michael Janecek Running Trails at Palmer High School Saturday afternoon.
“I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Every race is a new experiment,” Michaelson said after her race. “It was definitely an experiment, but it worked out for the best.”
Michaelson started the race trailing a fast front of the pack that included Kenai Central’s Allie Ostrander and Hope Steffensen, and Lathrop’s Brooke Lizotte and Megan Kubichek. Ostrander, who has taken the Alaska cross-country world by storm since debuting as a freshman runner last season, used her typically strong start to build a tremendous lead. Ostrander had an 11-second lead over Lizotte at the mile mark, led by more than 30 seconds as runners approached the second mile, and had pushed that advantage to about a minute before the final kilometer of the race.
“She is amazing,” Michaelson said of Ostrander. “She’s an incredible talent.”
At about the 1.5-mile mark, Michaelson was in fourth place behind Ostrander, Lizotte and Steffensen, and was bout 40 seconds behind first place. During the second mile, Michaelson was able to make a move and passed both Lizotte and Steffensen.
“I really had to use my head,” Michaelson said. “I was trying to go out more relaxed, but stick with the front of the pack. But they got away from me. I really had to work, but it worked out.”
Michaelson said, when running against a competitor like Ostrander, you have to realize Ostrander’s strength without conceding the race.
“It’s one of those things, you know where she’s at and what she’s capable of doing, but it’s never good to just give first place away, because anything could happen,” Michaelson said
Lizotte did try to challenge Ostrander and ran in second place for the first half of the race, but was forced to settle for fifth-place at the finish.
“Brooke was the bravest of all of us. She went out with Allie, and no one’s even dared to do that yet,” Michaelson said. “I give props to her.”
Ostrander won the race with a time of 17:42, while Michaelson was the runner-up at 18:43. Steffensen finished third at 18:54, while Kubichek (19:06) and Lizotte (19:08) also finished in the top 5.
Colony’s Makenzie Thompson was ninth for the Knights.
Grace Christian, the defending 1-2-3A state champions, jumped a class and won the girls’ 4A team title Saturday. The Grizzlies were led by seventh-place Morgan Lash, and placed five runners in the top 16 and six in the top 22. Grace finished with 52 points overall in the standings.
Lathrop, powered by Kubichek and Lizotte, finished as the runner-up in the team standings with 84 points. The Michaelson-led Knights finished third with 91 points, one point ahead of fourth-place Kodiak.
In addition to the top 10 finishes for the Knights, Bailey Meier was 21st and Samantha Victor finished 30th.
Samantha Contreras led Palmer with a 24th-place finish.
Palmer senior Chris Osiensky was the top runner in the 4A boys race. Osiensky, who was in the top 5 during a stretch of the race, finished eighth with a time of 16:34.
Lyon Kopsack led Colony with a 10th-place finish, and Brandeon Schafer followed in 13th place.
Fueled by two runners in the top 4 and four in the top 7, West Valley easily won the 4A boys team title with 29 points.
Peter Noon and Erich Hoefler led the Wolfpack with third- and fourth-place finishes respectively, but trailed a pair of Kodiak runners throughout the race. Levi Thomet won the battle of Bears teammates, using a time of 15:45.2 to edge Kodiak teammate Cole Christiansen and his mark of 15:46.6.
Homer swept the small-schools team titles.
Pedro Ochoa and Connor McCarron finished fourth and fifth to lead the Homer boys. Aurora Wacslawski (third), Barae Hirsch (fifth) and Rebecca Seneff (sixth) led the first-place Homer girls.
