SoHi celebrates homecoming by blowing out Houston

Colton Young scored three touchdowns, and Noah Fowler passed for three more, Friday as Soldotna notched a 60-0 homecoming victory over Houston at Justin Maile Field.

SoHi is now 3-0 in the Northern Lights conference and 4-1 overall. Houston falls to 1-2 in the league and 2-3 overall.

“We came out a little sluggish offensively and stopped ourselves a couple of times,” Soldotna coach Galen Brantley Jr. said. “For the second week in a row, though, I thought our defense was a unit that really stood out.”

The Stars, who led 13-0 after the first quarter and 34-0 at halftime, scored twice on defense and once on special teams.

Drew Gibbs returned a fumble 40 yards for a score and Chet Henson closed the game with an 81-yard interception return.

On special teams, Young had a 72-yard punt return.

Brantley Jr. said Zane Miller once again had a great game at linebacker, while John Alexander was solid on the line. He also gave credit to defensive coordinator Phil Leck and assistants Derek Urban, Josh Brantley and Guy Riley for getting the defense ready to play.

Houston gained just 59 yards on the ground and did not complete a pass. SoHi had 200 yards on the ground and 50 through the air.

Young also scored on a 9-yard pass from Noah Fowler and a 13-yard run.

Fowler also threw a 31-yard TD pass to Miller and a 19-yard strike to Jake Kooly. Fowler and Jared Chavez added touchdown runs.

“Our standards on the offensive side from an execution standpoint are extremely high,” Brantley Jr. said. “We’re farther along defensively than we are offensively, but our ultimate goal is to be playing our very best football when the playoffs roll around.

“We’re not in panic mode. We have room for improvement.”

The coach said offensive linemen Daniel Rosin and Troy Streiff had good games.

Kooly and Jarrett Urban were both injured in the game.

“We’re hoping for good news on both,” Brantley Jr. said. “Right now, it’s a little early to tell.”
