Brown Bears fall to Tomahawks in shootout

The Kenai River Brown Bears fell to 0-1-1 with a 6-5 shootout loss to the Johnstown (Pa.) Tomahawks on Thursday at the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
The Tomahawks used to be the Alaska Avalanche of Wasilla. The franchise moved to Johnstown following last season.
The game went back and forth between the two rivals. Evan Hesse opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game, but Kenai River came back with goals by Lucas Kohls and Albin Karlsson to take a 2-1 lead. Then, just 7:55 into the game, Johnstown’s Jesse Kessler lit the lamp for a 2-all tie after a frantic start.
Johnstown outshot the Brown Bears 10-9 in the first period, but after that the Bears would control the shots category. Kenai River outshot Johnstown 10-3 in the second, 12-3 in the third and 5-1 in overtime for a 36-17 advantage for the game.
The Bears went up 4-2 in the second period on goals by Zac Lazzaro and Karlsson, but the Tomahawks answered before the end of the second period on goals by JB Baker and Cobi Smith-Mass.
With 11:40 left in the game, Johnstown grabbed a 5-4 lead when Cody Boyd scored. Ryan Walker sent the game into overtime for the Bears when he scored with 3:23 left in the game.
In the shootout, the Bears missed all five of their chances. The lone goal of the shootout came from Johnstown’s Cody Gylling.
The Bears continue play at the showcase today and Saturday. Today, Kenai River plays the Odessa (Texas) Jackalopes at 7 a.m. ADT. Saturday, the Bears take on the Jamestown (NY) Ironmen at 6:15 a.m. ADT.
