Brown Bears drop OT contest to Jackalopes

The Kenai River Brown Bears dropped to 0-1-2 on the season by losing 5-4 in overtime to the Odessa (Texas) Jackalopes on Friday at the North American Hockey League Showcase at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.

Odessa's Lawrence Cornellier ended a back-and-forth game just 22 seconds into the extra period when he scored for the victory. Cornellier had two goals and an assist in the game.

Kenai River took the lead in the game on a goal by Eric Shand 3:55 into the contest, but Ryan Doucet answered for Odessa less than a minute later. Kirk Van Arkel scored a power-play goal for the Bears before the end of the period.

The Jackalopes again drew even just 1:58 into the second period when Pat Thompson scored, but just 36 second later, Chris Nuth gave the Brown Bears a 3-2 lead. However, Cornellier scored on the power play with just 1:18 left in the second to knot the score.

Anthony Olguin gave Odessa a 4-3 lead 2:30 into the final frame. With 7:33 left in the game, Carson Vance tied the game for the Brown Bears.

Kenai River enjoyed a 34-26 advantage on shots, but Blake Wojtala stood tall for Odessa in net, making 30 saves. Gustaf Johansson made 14 saves on 15 shots in 21:57 of play for the Bears, while Sean Healy relieved and made seven saves on 11 shots.

Kenai River finishes up play at the showcase Saturday at 6:15 a.m. ADT against the Jamestown (N.Y.) Ironmen. Jamestown is 2-1 at the showcase thus far.
