SoHi batters Kodiak in battle for first

Homer beats Skyview in other action

The Soldotna football team defeated Kodiak 41-7 on Saturday in a battle for the top of the Northern Lights Conference.

The Stars are now 4-0 in the league and 5-1 overall, while Kodiak is 2-1 in the league and 3-3 overall.

It was the first game played on the new turf at Joe Floyd Track and Field. The game was played in rainy and windy conditions.

Soldotna’s defense continued to force turnovers. Kodiak lost six fumbles and threw one interception. The Bears turned the ball over on their first four offensive possessions, all of which resulted in touchdowns.

On Kodiak’s first offensive play of the game, Troy Streiff returned a fumble 18 yards for a score. Turnovers then led to a 1-yard run by Drew Gibbs, a 1-yard run by Reid Schmelzenbach and a 64-yard run by Schmelzenbach. The gave Soldotna a 28-0 lead with 8:15 left in the second quarter.

After Kodiak scored for a 28-7 game, SoHi closed out the game with a Colton Young scoring run in the third quarter and a Schmelzenbach run in the fourth.

Schmelzenbach had three TDs and 140 yards, while Young ran for 125. SoHi had 351 yards rushing in the game, while Kodiak had 167.
Neither team completed a pass.

Homer 28, Skyview 14

The host Mariners prevailed in the rain and wind on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference play.

Homer moved to 2-1 in the NLC and 3-2 overall. The Mariners are now tied for second in the league with Kodiak.

Skyview drops to 0-3 in the league and 1-5 overall.

The Mariners jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the game. Konstantin Reutov scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and a 60-yard run in the second quarter. Reutov would rush for 154 yards on eight carries, but would leave the game with an injury.

Mark McGregor scored on a 2-yard run before the close of the half, then Noah Swenson had an interception return to start the second half.

Skyview would fight back. Brandon Rice scored on a 5-yard run with 12 seconds left in the third quarter, and Bailey Jones scored on a 4-yard run with 5:12 left in the game.

The Panthers were hurt by missed opportunities. In the third quarter, Skyview turned the ball over on downs at the Homer 1-yard line. In the fourth quarter, Skyview turned the ball over on downs at the Homer 3- and 8-yard lines.
