Nikiski, Skyview prevail in conference matches

Posted: September 18, 2012 - 11:11pm  |  Updated: September 19, 2012 - 2:58pm

Nikiski swept Homer three games to none in Southcentral conference volleyball play on Tuesday evening, with scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-17.
Bailey Buchholz had 15 digs and six kills to lead the Bulldogs. Teammate Rachel Thompson had six serving aces and 14 assists, Taylor Calderwood had five kills, and Sienna Wallis had five kills and three blocks.
“They executed very well, but the one thing we need to work on is mental toughness,” Nikiski coach Stacey Segura said. “We have these moments where we go on a hot streak and build a lead, then cool off and let the other team catch us. If we improve on that, and with the skills they have, we can be a tough team.”
Cayenna Anderson led Homer with three kills, 10 digs and perfect serving.
“In the second game, we started coming back, and Nikiski started making mistakes,” Homer coach Beth Trowbridge said. “I felt that we didn’t play with enough intensity overall, and we just weren’t covering well on their tips. We were having trouble being an offensive team.”
Zoia Basargin had two kills and four solo blocks for Homer, and Alicia Eisenhower had three serving aces.
Nikiski will travel to Anchorage for Friday and Saturday’s Spiketacular tournament at West, and do so with a 2-1 conference record, and 4-1 overall.
Homer also travels to Anchorage, with a conference record of 0-4, and 1-4 overall.

Skyview 3, Seward 1
Skyview defeated Seward in a Southcentral conference game Tuesday evening at Skyview. The two teams were split after two games, with Skyview winning the first 25-11, and Seward taking the second 25-23. Skyview ended the match with winning games of 25-15 and 25-17.
“We’re continuing to work on getting better,” Skyview coach Sheila Kupferschmid said. “Overall it’s a nice win for us on our home floor, and we’re always striving for consistency, especially in the pass game. At times we pass very well, and that’s the kind of play we want to see.”
Skyview’s Marlee Cunningham recorded 28 digs, three blocks and 10 kills, Holly Ramsell had 36 digs and seven kills, Hayley Ramsell had 30 points scored, and Cheyanne Laber had three blocks and 11 kills in a game that Kupferschmid said was a “coming-out game” for her.
“She’s been improving a lot, and she continues to get better,” Kupferschmid said.
The win leaves Skyview with a 3-1 conference record and 3-2 overall. The Panthers will play Kenai at home on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m., before making the trip up to Anchorage to play in West’s Spiketacular tournament.

For Seward, Gretchen Lindquist had 8 kills and Tessa Adelmann had 6 kills.
