Soldotna football tops Wasilla

Posted: September 21, 2012 - 10:11pm  |  Updated: September 22, 2012 - 4:26pm

Rare is the game that a football team can give up 48 points and win. Rarer still is giving up 48 and winning convincingly. But that’s just what the Soldotna Stars did Friday night, trouncing host Wasilla 68-48 in a muddy nonconference battle.

Colton Young led the way for SoHi with four touchdowns and 190 yards rushing, as the Stars Wing-T offense, behind a dominating performance by the offensive line, had its way with the Warriors defense.

SoHi had 463 yards rushing from seven different runners, and five players had at least one touchdown.

“Most games, it’s easy to identify one or two standouts,” Soldotna coach Galen Brantley Jr. said. “But tonight, it was the entire front seven.”

The Warriors got off to a quick start, scoring first en route to a 14-12 first-quarter lead. But the Senior Night crowd at Wasilla’s Veterans Memorial Field saw nothing but Stars after that, as the visitors racked up three unanswered touchdowns to blow the game open by early in the third quarter.

Brantley Jr. said Wasilla’s quick start did not alarm his troops.

“Adversity is part of football. When we see adversity, that’s when they pull together,” he said. “I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The win was, perhaps, especially satisfying for senior offensive tackle Jon Alexander. The Skyview transfer experienced his first win under the lights Friday night and is enjoying the first winning season of his high school career with the 6-1 Stars.

“Wasilla is deep and talented,” Alexander said. “But we persevered and came through adversity.”

Quarterback Noah Fowler and running back Drew Gibbs each found pay dirt twice for SoHi. Fowler, a senior, scored on two first-half keepers of 15 and 17 yards. Gibbs, a freshman, scored on a 1-yard plunge at the end of the first half and again on a beautiful, tackle-busting, 14-yard dash midway through the final stanza.

Blake Riley and Zach Hallford also notched touchdowns for Soldotna, which faces rival Kenai Central next week.

Wasilla junior wide receiver Isaiah Dawkins caught three touchdowns for the Warriors, who dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
